The Dowden family,
Sorry to hear of Capt. Charles passing. I heard of him often, but I did not have the privilege of meeting him.
I am a distant cousin of his. My mother was Susie Dowden from Tack's Beach, Placentia Bay. Her brother was Cyril Hubert Dowden who I am sure may have visited Charles' father, Captain Steve, over the years.

Ann, Frances, Susan, Roxanne and all the boys, we are thinking of you all as you say so long to Captain Dowden. Keith kept us in the loop with Ann and Charl, he spoke of him most every day. I am here in CBS caring for mom, he certainly was a wonderful friend to her and dad for many years. She often retold the story of my first trip to Labrador on the Burgeo in 1962 and how comforting it was to all of us knowing that Charl Dowden was on board. As neighbors in Carbonear we knew you all! And tonight we keep you in our thoughts as you share stories and memories of times gone by. Love to you all. Fair winds across the bay Skipper Charl, say hi to Dad.

To Ann and the Dowden Family─ April 19/2021
My deepest sympathies to Captain Charles family on his passing.
I remember the numerous times I visited the Dowdens home, always anticipating an enjoyable conversation and recollections of the exciting and wonderful times of the era when schooners were everywhere around the coast of Newfoundland. Every time I was received by the Skipper and Ann with the warmest respect, a friendship I will always cherish.
Skipper Charl came from a bred of seamen out of Rock Harbour, Placentia Bay, whose life was defined by the North Atlantic Ocean (the roughest waters in the world), and a seafaring father, Captain Steve, who knew the coast of Newfoundland, before the time of radar, better than any captain of his day.
I had the luck to sail with Charl on my father's schooners, the Alcala, Boutilier and Thomas Gorton, from the time I was 7-years old. I saw in storms, from the deck and wheelhouse, who Skipper Char was ─ he was as find a seaman as ever set foot on a deck in the island of Newfoundland.
Later Charl became Captain, in charge of schooners, coastal and Gulf Ferries, and off shore supply boats serving the oil rigs near Sable Island, Nova Scotia. In fine weather, or in frightful winter storms, far from the safety of any harbor, the Skipper was the same. He was unfazed, undaunted, in control, and in full command of himself and his vessel. Being resigned to self-confidence no matter what the sea had to offer. He exuded a mariner's strength, befitting any of the great Master Mariners of Newfoundland that ever went before the mast in the generations before his time.
As it was one time in Carbonear, when all her great seamen came ashore and retired, they displayed a wonderful calm and sense of wisdom about life ─ so it was for Captain Charl. Going to his home at any time, the door was open and a warm conversation greeted me. Just as he was during his life time at sea, even when he had some illnesses this past couple of years, he never lost his dignity of a mariner's confidence and strength. It was something special to sit and have a talk with him.
When I was in his company, he always gave the presence that I was an equal shipmate to him, in all the stories he told about his time at sea. I was welcomed into his wealth of maritime wisdom, which never failed to give a lesson about some truth in life. For me now, his absence leaves a void in my heart, another loss to the connection of the great generations of seamen I knew, their schooners and the lessons that only the sea can teach.
Newfoundland has lost a true soul of the Sea, a mariner of the highest order who matched the greatest sailors this province ever produced, some generations ago. He will be interned next to them, taking his well-earned, rightful place of honour, alongside the greatest seamen that ever sailed the Oceans of the world.

Mrs. Dowden and and all of Skipper Dowden's family I would like to pass on my condolences. My father sailed with the Skipper, and the Skipper senior over the years. They were a different (hardy bread) of sea going folks. The last time I had an opportunity to speak to him was at my Father's wake and it was a pleasure to hear some stories.
May he have fair winds and calm seas.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and my perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Many fond memories of years ago when Charl and Annie would visit and the yarns between him and dad about their experiences on the sea. They were a different generation of mariners for sure. So sad to see them go but take comfort in the memories. Fair Winds and Calm Seas Captain Dowden.

Sincere condolences to Ann, family and friends!
Captain Charles Dowden was our family neighbor on Masonic Avenue, Carbonear. Friend of Father and Mother and Keith for so many years. I remember the many visits to his kitchen table, talks about the Labrador fishery, family and politics. Looking up the gangway in Battle Harbour to see our friend and Captain looking from the bridge on the Nonia, Tavenor or Springdale! We knew we would be in for a special trip back to Carbonear. And he was a comforting hand to the family during a shipwreck at Peckford's Island on the SS Burgeo in 1962.
To the great memories and friendship, eternal rest in peace!

To the extended Family of Skipper Charl.
So saddened to hear of his passing. What a wonderful character. The Stories. The Memories of Captain Charl could fill up an encyclopedia. I always found a way on my forays back to Carbonear over the years to stop and enjoy a yarn with the Skipper. In many ways, as a boy growing up, hearing the stories about men like Captain Dowden inspired me to hear the call of the sea myself. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the entire Dowden Family at this sad time.
They that go down to the ships, that do business in great waters, these are the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep.

To Ann and family,
On behalf of our family we are indeed sorry for your loss at this time. Captain Charl was one of the last of a generation of sailors who in his career worked his way up the nautical ladder to the position of Captain .Held in high regard by his peers in his many years going to sea. Traveling to hundreds of ports over the decades with passengers and freight .A tower of a man who was not afraid of hard work. Raising a large and able family with his life partner Ann.
Onshore he ran his home like a ship. Painted fences , freshly cut grass and just perfectly tidy. In his years of retirement he would pick up groceries , visit the local Mall and certainly go up on the wharf. He over time collected pallets which he had a system of dismantling and storing back for his wood cooking stove in the shed.
He cooked many meals there as a pastime. Mentioning how he was saving on electricity.
He enjoyed their summer weekends at their cabin in Spout Cove.
Captain Dowden has gone on that final voyage and we wish him fair winds along the way.
Our thoughts are with the family during the days ahead.
