For almost a century, Dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He told many stories of his family while growing up in Markland and Victoria. Stories like how he cut the roof off a car so he could have a convertible; or how Aunt Dot Priddle used to give him snacks when he lived up “on the hill”. Growing up Fred and I heard stories of when he worked for John Clarke in Victoria and with Grayson Clarke. Then there was his time in “the Sand” where he tinkered with transistor radios. Then came our Mom, Muriel, and then Fred Jr. Stories of working in the garage on the hill and living in Sunnyside. Then came Paul, and Dad’s work life in Churchill Falls. He always spoke highly of Labrador and his ancestry from the “Big Land”.
Fast forward a few years and now he is working for the Town of Victoria. He enjoyed those years, he became a member of the LIONS Club, a Volunteer Fire Fighter and had a seat on the town council. He even had a stint as an entrepreneur opening Baldwin’s Arcade and then Baldwin’s Take-Out. I still remember him and Uncle George making the roof truss. Grand opening special was a two-piece chicken and chips snack pack plus a can of Pepsi all for the price of $1.50
Fast forward again, now he is working for Harris and Associates. He’s back in Labrador working and Mom goes with him at times. He thoroughly enjoyed his employment there and I recall him saying “I have to pop out to the office and see where Tom wants me to go”. Dad worked there up into his eighties.
Dad was not all work; he joined the Masons and eventually became a Shriner. He was quite fond of the good works of his fraternal Brothers and became involved in their activities. His Shrine Boat was a fixture in the garage and on parade. His Lodge Brothers were important to him and we are glad that this was a part of his life, right up to the very end. He also joined the Legion and was proud to attend events as he had siblings, a son and a grandson serving or served.
As the eldest child in his family, Dad had a special place in his heart for all his brothers and sisters. He spoke highly of all of them and was proud of their achievements.
Dad loved his grandchildren and would do anything for them. He beamed whenever they were around, and they knew that.
As Fred and I look into the mirror, we can see the different traits that we inherited from him. He was a teacher, mentor and advisor … but most important … he was our Dad.
