Howard was a family friend in my life since I was a young teen through his friendship with my parents. Howard always had a movie quote or a joke to make you laugh and you never knew it was coming. I have many fond memories of grocery shopping with Howard - since he had limited eyesight and unable to drive - my folks would bring him along on our weekly shopping trip. We would all be laughing and giggling the entire time. He will be deeply missed. Rest in Peace Howard.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Howard’s passing. Howard moved to Happy Valley-Goose Bay a couple of years before I did and we shared a friendship for 26 plus years. At that time the provincial government was in early stages of promoting computers and many workers felt uncertain about operating computers. I was always very impressed with Howard’s enthusiasm towards learning computers and helping government workers adjust to this new technology. Given his restricted eyesight I was always amazed at how he kept every computer in great working order in the Big Land. He juggled his schedule for a long time, working hours sometimes after everyone else had gone home. He made friends in all government offices and I often told him that he was popular enough to run in politics. I was impressed with his knowledge of music, his charm/humour and his story telling. He often told many fond stories of growing up with his family, his time in Halifax and his memories of friends in Goose Bay…I will never forget Howard; I feel blessed to have met him and proud to call him a friend…thank you Howard…rest in peace. Howard was a cherished friend whose warmth and resilience touched both myself and my wife Norma.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. For 30 years, he shared with us his easy-going spirit, quick laughter, and his unwavering perservence.
As an IT professional, Howard worked with quiet dedication, solving problems with patience and skill. Beyond his screen he had a passion for the rich melodies of his home audio system, the fun of following his favorite sports figures and the pride he had for his collections of audio equipment , carvings, music and watches. Rest peacefully, dear friend. You will be deeply missed and not forgotten.

Jan and I were saddened to learn of Howard's passing. Our condolences to his family. Jan was a co-worker with Howard when his office was in the same bldg in HV-GB. I met Howard through work. I worked with Bell Aliant and any issues Howard work have with the Government data network he would notify our office. Howard would also contact me for a ride , as he couldn't drive himself. I would pick him up and we would troubleshoot the issue , then I would drop him off again at his office. He was a very personable individual and I was amazed at his ability to troubleshoot circuitboards with his limited vision. He was also proud of the audio/video system he had in his house which he demonstrated to me anytime he added a new component. I believe he could blow out the windows if he turned the volume up on bust.

Howard was an OCIO employee and he helped all government offices, and that is where i met Howard. I can’t recall what year that was but he was there to help me out a good many times with computer issues right up to just before he retired. Sometimes he would talk on the phone and walk me through things if he couldn’t make to the office. Howard also helped clean up my laptop a few times. He was a nice person and would always give me pointers on computer issues. Condolences to his family and all his friends. Rest Easy Howard.

My name is Roland Sampson, and I met Howard many years ago while we were both students at the school for the blind in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Though life took us in different directions, and it’s been a long time since we last spoke, I’ve never forgotten his personality. Howard had a gift for storytelling — his stories were always animated, often funny, and carried just a hint of mischief or adventure.
One memory that still makes me laugh is visiting his place and watching Scarface together. He thought I’d get a kick out of it — and he wasn’t wrong. His running commentary and reactions added a whole other layer to the movie. It was a fun visit, and that moment has stuck with me ever since. I still think of him whenever that film comes up.
Reading about the life he built after we lost touch — especially his dedication to his work and the community in Happy Valley-Goose Bay — it’s clear he made a meaningful path for himself. It’s always special to learn where former classmates’ lives have taken them, and Howard’s journey impacted those around him.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who got to know him.

To Wylie and family. So sorry for your loss. I last spoke with Howard shortly after recently being released from The Health Science Center.
Howard and I would normally talk on the phone for an hour or so at a time. During those calls, Howard would fill me on what was happening regarding work. Listening to him speak of his co-workers and close friends, it made me feel as if I had known them as well because he spoke so highly of them. There was never a conversation over the years where he wouldn't have me in stitches. He just had that way about him. Never a dull moment to be sure!
Thoughts and prayers with you at this time of sorrow.
