Obituary of Harold "Jim" Dicks

Please share a memory of Harold "Jim" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Harold James “Jim” Dicks, a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and loyal friend. He left us peacefully at Cambridge Estates on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at the age of 96, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Harbour Buffett to John and Grace Dicks, and his childhood there instilled in him a lifelong love for music and his passion for playing the accordion.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents: John and Grace; his brother: Jack Dicks of Halifax; and sisters: Ethel Burton and Myrtle Anderson of Harbour Grace.

Jim is survived and greatly missed by his loving wife, Marie of 69 yrs; and his children: Glenda and Steve Smith of Harbour Grace, Arlene Dicks and Harvey Young of St John’s, Cynthia and Rivelyn Parsons of St John’s, Beverly Dicks and Andrew Crane of Victoria, BC, Janice and Jerry Winsor of Triton, and James(Jim) M and Colleen Dicks of Porters Lake, NS; he was Poppy to 11 grandchildren and Poppy-Great to 23 great-grandchildren.

Jim, in all our 69 plus years together, your love, devotion, and commitment to myself and our family never wavered. Through all of life’s joys and challenges, lord knows our 6 children gave us plenty of both and I wouldn’t change a thing. You were my protector, best friend and my greatest love. Every moment spent with you is a precious memory, you are my heart and soul, and I love you more than words can say.

Daddy, we will miss you immensely. You were our “go-to” when life got rough, our guiding light, and our comfort when we needed clarity. You were always someone we could turn to, and although you were a straight shooter, you got your point across without judgement and always gave amazing advice. Poppa, you were our protector, our hero and greatest friend all in one. We may not have had a lot growing up but you made sure there was never a shortage of love.

Jim wore many hats in his life, but he was always most proud of his time at the Harbour Lodge where he retired as Administrator in 1989. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a man of integrity, kindness and generosity who always made family his top priority. His love for music and playing the accordion was something he often shared with his family and friends. This was never more evident than during his time at Cambridge Estates where he and our sister Arlene entertained to the delight of residents and staff alike. We would like to extend special thanks to our cousin, Harold Burton, and the amazing staff of Cambridge Estates for going above and beyond all our expectations. A special thank you goes to Dr. Singleton for her kindness, compassion and amazing support through Dad’s final days. It meant everything to us.

Rest easy Dear Ole Dad, Bruddy and your Trouters will take care of Momma for you.
