Dear Winne and Family It is with a saddened heart that I heard of Allan Georges passing. I want to pay tribute to his memory by relating two of mine. My first memory is full of visual thoughts. The setting, time to tar the traps. The huge tar pot is full, bubbling and filling the air with that unmistaken smell of bubbling tar. The real center piece is when Allen George has one of his fishing partners ( Liv Tucker) dress in his wife's oldest tar stained dress, thus the fun and play on words began, Allen George was a master at this. The second memory is about his horses. I'm positive that Allen George was the first horse whisper in Burnt Point if not in all of Canada. He had such a way with them, that they would do anything he wispered in their ear. I'm also confident that if Allen George could have taught the horses the A,E,I,O,U sounds they would have been able to talk. I wonder what the horses would have to say. Burnt Point has lost a stalwart man from its sight but not from our memories. God Bless the Oliver family today and all the day's to come.

As a little girl, I spent a lot of time with Nan and Pop. Every friday afternoon I would get off the bus there and not go home until Olga and Selby took me home Sunday evening. Often times nan would have cold plate supper on the table waiting for me when I got there. We ate it early because Pop liked his potato salad warm. If there was a cake, it was Pops birthday cake, every time. I swear he was hundreds of years old.
Many times Pop would tackle the horse and the three of us went berry picking. He always made sure that he had a cushion for me to sit on. Sometimes, I was frightened to death because Pop would make the horse run so fast that I swore we broke the speed limit and I'm pretty sure he didn't have his licenses, any registration or insurance. However, when we got in the woods, Pop wasn't much interested in picking berries. He was more focused on preparing our lunch and finding a good stick for toasting our bread.
During the spring, we helped set the potatoes, during the fall we dug them. Every summer we had the task of helping with the hay. Spreading it, turning it and putting it in the stable loft to ensure the animals had enough for the winter. Although it may have been a chore, it brought everyone together. Not only the family, but the community. As soon as the horse was tackled with the hay crate, every kid in Burnt Point came to help. Mostly for the chance that maybe this time Allan George will pick them to stamp down the hay.
During the winter months, if we were lucky, Pop would hook up the sleigh and take us for a ride, bells and all. Often times he got mad at me for pulling Trevor on the slide. I didn't realize until I got older that he didn't want Trevor to get cold by just sitting there.
I didn't get to spend much time with Pop in recent years, which makes me sad. I hope that he knew that I always thought of him and loved him so much. It is funny, through all the years and time I have spent with Pop, I have heard many stories, but today I tried to think of some and I drew a blank. I could just think of all the memories I had of Pop. As my boys grow older I'll tell them what a fantastic grandfather he was and how I wish they knew him. I can still hear him say 'Oh army training' or quote 'ye though I walk through the valley.....'. Pop I hope now that the valley is paved with all the golden hay your heart desires. That there are cows, horses and chickens for you to tend to. I pray that everyone gets a chance to stamp down Allan Georges hay and that every stick is the most perfect stick for toasting bread. I miss you and love you dearly. (p.s. I like warm potato salad, too)

Memories of a daughter -
Dad tackling the horse and slide, going to Bread N Butter pond with Barry and I, in tow. Grub bag, fishing gear and skates inclusive. Dad would ice fish while Barry and I were skating. Sure enough, 20 minutes into the endeavor, I'd be bawling, "My feet are cold"! Dad would gather up some boughs for the fire to get that going, take off my skates and warm them with his hefty fisherman, weathered hands just long enough until the tingle left my feet. Once the flames were going good, I'd place them next to the fire.
We were a fussy bunch. Dad, forest conversationalist... NOT, tackled the horse mid Dec in search of that perfect Christmas tree. At total of 8-12 trees would return. We all gathered at the back door and once the frost was removed from the glass, he'd show off our selection. One by one he'd pick up and say, "This one", "I can put a branch in here".... Patience; very much a virtue. When it came to the children he had all kinds of patience.
I always had X's on the heels of my boots; why you would ask? Dad would take his pocket knife (always carried it in his pocket you know) and carve out the letter X. His reasoning was so as if I were to walk on a slippery patch of ice/snow, I wouldn't fall down. Clever man my Dad!
Lost in the woods - I don't remember what harsh winter month, year, perhaps early 70's; Dad nearly got lost in the woods. The task; Dad and horse, Queen went to pull home Uncle Ray's broken down ski-doo. I do remember the storm starting quickly, I remember the endless phone calls, I remember Mom going from window to window. My father's story was that yes, in fact he did lose his way, he didn't know where he was. Knowing that he was lost, he untackled the horse, held onto her reins and hoped that Queen would guide him home. Sure enough, Queen, the ever faithful horse, led him home. Once he arrived at Jesse's Tolt, Dad's surroundings became familiar. Dad and Queen had such a tight bond. So close, I like to think they are together today in that great pasture in the sky.

I am saddened this morning to hear of the passing of Allen George. Along with the sadness there is a sense of nostalgia and a longing for those years that I was raised in Burnt Point. There is also a feeling that a certain part of the history of Burnt Point has come to an end with Allen George’s passing. He is the last of a breed of strong, honourable men whose only goal was to feed their family and to leave things better for their children. I left home in 1964 some 48 years ago and Allen George and his family have done a lot of living since then; however, memories of him and the many evenings that I spent in his home are part of me and no doubt contributed to my character and understanding of what it means to belong to a community. His sense of humour and easy going demeanor made it easy for both adults and children of all ages to be around him. When you saw Allen George with his horse and slide or box-cart, there was always a few children, not necessarily his own, tagging along with him. I remember that Allen George love his horse and treated all animals with respect. That in itself says a lot about a man. When I fished with my father “Pop” down in Big Cove, I sat next Allen George at the splitting table and his story telling and light heartiness made those cold, foggy days a lot more tolerable. Thank you Allen George and Winnie for all of those good times and memories. You have always been with me. My thoughts are with you Olga, Loretta, Junior, Valerie and Cynthia whom I knew well and of course all of the family that I haven’t met. Peace be with you. Franklin.
