It's with great sadness that I find myself having to write this today. A huge loss in my life and a piece of me has gone. Gone to a better place of being pain free, happiness and a sense of feeling free. Now an angel to watch over us..... my husband Brian and my children Brendan, Mitchell and Kristen, keeping us safe and sound. Also watching over all of you. I'm saddened I'm not here with you all.
I remember the days of being at Poppy's house, lots of kittens running around, cows in the fields and riding the tractor, the smell of cut wood in the barn and the green gremlin that dad owned. I remember riding in the back hatch around Carbonear.... apparently this is currently illegal. Emoji The strum of the guitar he played and singing "Kimberley Ann married a man who washed his face in a frying pan"...I always loved that song when I was little, I just couldn't understand why anyone would want to wash their face in a frying pan....
Every relationship has it challenges.... and lord knows we had ours. We reunited and the past was the past. Even through these challenges I knew dad never stopped loving me and I never stopped loving him. That's what families are all about.
I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with breast cancer in 2010 and because of that I became a strong fighter and expected no less from him during his last few days. He always said "I will never let you give up the fight", and I wasn't willing to let him give up either. This unfortunate incident brought my mother Eileen and him closer together, once again talking....nothing could have made me happier!!! I know he was proud of me becoming what I have become, my family, career, my outlook on life - live every day to the fullest.
He called my daughter Kristen "cutie pie" and Brendan and Mitchell "skipper". He always found a way to make them laugh. But it saddens me that they didn't have the great opportunity that I had to see him one last time. His birthday on Halloween will come and we can reflect on the costumes he use to wear and scare the kids coming to the door to get candy. We thought that was funny...he would say "oh well more candy for us"..
I arrived to the hospital in St.John's just before he went in for his heart surgery. All he kept saying was "Kim please get me out of here and take me home, promise me you'll take me home tomorrow"... and so I promised that I would eventually take him home. I knew it was going to be a long road of recovery but didn't expect this outcome.
Dads looking down on all of us right now, in a better place, not wanting a fuss to be made. Wondering why we are bothering with all of this. Things like this can either bring families together or tear them apart. I feel that I have gained some family back over the last few days, loved ones that I've lost touch with, now back in my life to move forward and reflect with. I couldn't have done it without your love and support. I know dad would be proud of that!! I sure am.
So, as I sit here tonight writing this my heart aches and feels broken ....it will take time to repair. And yes dad I will take you home... just not the way I wanted to.
You will never be forgotten...you can be my angel... You're the brightest star in the sky...I will always be looking for you!!! I love you to the moon and back and will miss you dearly. You'll be forever in my heart. We will meet again in heaven some day..... rest in peace dad!!!!
love you always DAD
