Joel was not only my closest friend but a big brother to me. I met Joel in the early 1980's at a time when I was having trouble adjusting to my new life in Winnipeg. He introduced me to his family and friends (Tyrell & family). We spent hours just hanging out, driving around in his little car, going to the lakes and countryside. He was at my side when I was at my lowest lows and at my highest highs. I shared my family (sisters Roxanne and Rosemay) with him as well. I have wonderful memories of sharing many Christmas's and other holidays (ei. Thanksgiving) of all of us together. If it were not for Joel I would have given up on Manitoba and would have returned to Ontario, but thanks to his patients, kindness and love, I persevered. Then in 1991 I met the love of my life, Henry. Yes, in Winnipeg! Needless to say I had to get Joel to give Henry a once/twice over and give me his approval. Shortly thereafter Joel met his soul mate. I never had a chance to say THANK YOU. Thank You for being my pal, my big brother. You're an angel. How blessed that we have been to know you and love you.

Joy, my heart is heavy with sadness as I just read today that you lost your beloved Prince Charming Joel . . . Your love and devotion to each other was always so evident in how you looked at each other. May you find peace and comfort in your wonderful memories of Joel, and from all of the love and support that you are surrounded in by your family and friends. Ironically, today, I am the guest speaker at Agape Hospice for their 'Coping with the Holidays Grief Workshop'.
“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to a new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.”
Take very good care . . .
Warmest Regards,
Jacqueline Hoare,
Former Chaplain
Agape Hospice

Just heard about the passing of Joel. He was perhaps my first real friend from the time I arrived in Winnipeg in 1968, and has remained so for all these years. He was always ready to help in any way he could and sometimes went out of his way to do so. We extend our deepest sympathies to Joy, and others in his family.

A brilliant mind, an artistic spirit, a gentle soul, a heart for God, a practical faith, a devoted companion - all this and more describes Joel and just some of the reasons you chose him, Joy. In all of the ups and downs - the sorrow of loss and the joy of memories, know that you are supported - and that you get the choice to grieve in a way that feels right for you. Supporting you from a distance....

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Joel's passing today. Joel was very kind and friendly. We spent a lot of time together when he taught me in photography for over a year. He was a brilliant photographer. I remember when he was working on his boat; he showed me it several times as he completed each stage. I imagine it was amazing when he was finished. I didn't get the privilege of seeing it completed. Please accept my deepest condolences and may the Lord strengthen you and your family at this difficult time. God bless.

Thinking of you.
Found in the dead soldier’s shirt pocket, over his heart, a newspaper clipping which the young man had apparently always carried with him. His buddy opened it, read it and cried again. The clipping said so much about what his friend believed about death and life. So he sent the clipping home to the dead soldier’s parents, that they might be comforted by what their son believed, that his faith might help strengthen their faith, the clipping read something like this.
"We are standing on a shore. A large sailing ship is about to pull out. Friends and relatives of ours are standing on the deck, waving goodbye, throwing streamers, calling to us, calling our names. And we call to them and to each other. ‘Look, there’s Grandma…there’s Uncle Joe…there’s Uncle Bill.’ A bell sounds. The ships begins to move away. "We stand silently for a very long time and watch as the ship goes further and further away until, finally, the mast is just a vertical pencil line on the distant horizon. Then it too goes down, until we can no longer see it. And we sigh, ‘Oh, she’s gone.’
"But gone from where? Gone from our sight. That’s all. "For at the very moment we sigh, ‘Oh, she’s gone,’ another cried on another shore is jumping up and down, laughing and yelling and pointing excitedly out to sea saying, ‘Look! She’s coming. Look, the ship Is coming home! Look! There’s Grandma…there’s Uncle Joe…there’s Uncle Bill.’" The ship is coming home. There is another shore, another dimension in which we have already begun to live. We are filled with the Spirit of our Risen Savior—forever.
