Obituary of Sylvia Kennedy

Passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, Sylvia Kennedy of Harbour Grace, age 80 years. A graduate of St. Clare’s School of Nursing in 1961, Sylvia’s career as an RN spanned over 35 years and included service at Western Memorial in Corner Brook and St. Clare’s General Hospital in St. John’s.  Sylvia was also the last Director of Nursing at the old Carbonear General Hospital and the first director of nursing at the new Carbonear General when it opened in 1972. During her career as a nurse, Sylvia encountered people during some of the most anxious times of their lives, and treated everyone she met with kindness and compassion, and it is that for which she will be most remembered.

She leaves behind to celebrate her life husband of 55 years, Bill; one daughter, Jennifer, Los Angeles, USA; one son, Shane (Vivian), Guangzhou, China; two brothers, Terry (Yvonne) Doucette and Andrѐ (Linda) Doucette; sisters-in-law, Regina (John, deceased) French and Catherine (Rex) Sinyard; also a large number of other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Sylvia’s family doctors, Dr. Lonz Button and Dr. Megan Hayes and all of the other kind healthcare professionals at St. Clare’s Hospital, Dr. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, and the Carbonear General Hospital Cancer Ward for their consideration and care.  In addition, the family would like to send a special thanks to all family and friends, in particular Catherine Sinyard, for their invaluable help during a most difficult time.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Noel's Funeral Home, Harbour Grace on Sunday, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations in her memory may be made to the Baccalieu Trail S.P.C.A., P.O.
