To all those who had the pleasure of sitting in Pete Sampson's barber's chair, he will always be remembered as the friendly barber. But he was more than a practitioner of the tonsorial art. Much more! Artist, raconteur and collector of curios, Pete had a great sense of humor and a wit as sharp as his razor. As he circled the chair, he entertained his customers with anecdotes, riddles, jokes and stories drawn from his bottomless reservoir of material he had picked up from other clients and friends and cheerfully passed them along. Pete had a keen interest in history and literature, matched only by his passion for the golden age of entertainment from radio, the big screen and television. He especially appreciated good comedy, and collecting classic comics, which adorned the walls of his barber shop. Comics with titles like The Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy and Gunsmoke. Perhaps nobody knows how many haircuts Pete conducted over his more than half century of practicing his trade in Carbonear and Harbour Grace. But those of us who had the honor and pleasure of siting in his chair and sharing his company, always left with smiles on our faces, well groomed, well entertained and filled with memories that will last our lifetime.
Sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

I was very saddened to learn of Pete's passing. As a young boy growing up in Carbonear, Pete was like a giant to me. To say I respected him and his barber shop would be an understatement. He seemed like some kind of mythical figure, like he'd been here forever. I remember very vividly walking down over Bannerman Street, and seeing Pete's red, white, and blue barber pole spinning around at the top left corner of his shop. I'd walk in, and Pete would take a little peek at me and continue cutting a man's hair. It wasn't until a couple of minutes after I'd sat down that Pete would pipe up and say something like "What's your father up to today?" I'd be sat in the waiting area with my imagination running wild, looking at everything on the walls: pictures of old hockey teams, shipwrecks, a man standing next to a massive codfish, Joey Smallwood, everything. Vintage western comic books like 'The Lone Ranger' and 'Tonto' lined the upper walls. A collection of antique bottles sat atop a light blue cabinet. A shelf in the waiting area contained issues of 'National Geographic' and 'Time' magazine. On top of the shelf was an old TV with only two channels, but was very rarely turned on.
Pete's barber shop was an atmosphere that exploded your senses. Maybe this happened by accident, but I like to think Pete intentionally made it that way. After all, he was an artist.
He was a great man. He was a giant, and I'll always miss going down to his shop for a chat and a haircut.

To the Sampson Family
On behalf of myself and my family I wish to express our most sincere condolences on Pete’s passing. My Dad, Jim Hiscock, of Heart’s Delight, Trinity Bay, was a customer of Pete the barber for many, many years. Pete said that at the time of my father’s passing (2007), my Dad was his customer longer than any one else. Pete did a sketch of our Dad in his barber chair at his last haircut and gave him, which we still have and cherish.
A true gentleman, leaving a legacy of touching many lives with his craft and his genuineness in relating to all he met; know that his life was well lived and valued by all!

I am deeply saddened to learn of Pete's passing. Hospitality and warmth were two of the many attributes Pete displayed as I entered his shop. Back in the day, one of the first stops I would make, after visiting from Churchill Falls, Labrador, was Pete's barbershop! It was a highlight of the trip! I marveled at Pete's ability to carry on an in-depth conversation, or even a light joke, while remaining intently focused on cutting your hair. Periodically, Pete would stop, glance at you in the mirror, tilt his head slightly, and make a profound point that he wanted you to know and remember. This was especially true if you shared the same hockey team during the playoffs! You connected with Pete at a higher level during these times! Pete was a pleasant, kindhearted, gentleman who will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy to Pete's family. May he rest in peace.

From 1996 to '98, Pete taught me to paint in oils. His lessons, given in the back of his barber shop in Carbonear, were relaxing, fun, and afforded me many hours of happiness.
Pete also taught children in the community to paint, including my daughter, Beth. He provided her with a means of self-expression and a hobby that, many years later, she still enjoys.
Pete was always fun to visit --- I've never known anyone with such a lengthy catalogue of jokes filed away in his capacious memory bank.
I was privileged to preside when he and his wife renewed their marriage vows on their 25th wedding anniversary --- an occasion attended by many, many well-wishers.
In his own unique way, Peter Sampson made this world a better place.

I remember as a boy and yound adult getting my haircut at Petes barbour shop in Carbonear. That feeling when you walked in was similar to the feeling of home.
Friends would think I was crazy to continue to drive so far to get a haircut. It wasnt just a hair cut to me, it was the smells of my childhood and memories. Seeing everything placed on the walls of days gone by and his art studio in the backroom. I guess this is where I got my ways of decorating my "mancave".
Thank you for my memories, rest in peace Pete. To his family, im sorry for your loss. I know he's with God now and everyone else that has returned home.
