Obituary of James 'Jim' Penney

Please share a memory of James 'Jim' to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James ‘Jim’ Penney passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Carbonear General Hospital on Friday, June 17, 2022. Jim was born in Salmon Cove on October 7, 1940. He grew up in Carbonear, where he and his wife Ada (née Earle) met, married, and raised their three children: Craig, Grant, and Janice. Jim worked for Newfoundland Power for 27 years. However, his life-long passion was hockey. Jim played for the Conception Bay CeeBees from 1958 to 1968 and the St. John’s Capitals from 1969 to 1973. As Captain for many of those years, Jim led his teams to five Herder Memorial Trophy provincial championships and was inducted into the NL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. He showed persistent leadership to players of all ages as past president of Conception Bay North Minor Hockey and in his coaching of many minor teams. Jim and Ada travelled all over Newfoundland, Canada, and the world thanks to his love of the sport. Many times, they would come home with the championship trophy. Jim’s passion for hockey lives on in his sons and grandsons, who always loved hearing his stories and expert advice. They will carry on their Pop’s legacy by wearing his jersey number 7 for many years to come. Leaving to mourn with beautiful memories are his devoted wife of 60 years, Ada, sons: Craig (Wendy) and Grant (Geraldine), and daughter: Janice. Also, sister: Lillian (George) and brothers: Henry (Bernadette) and George (Janice). He also leaves behind beloved grandchildren: Corey (Kristen), Jason (Maggie), Jessica (Stylianos), Jeremy, and great-grandson: Beau. Jim will also be remembered by a large circle of loving nieces, nephews, and special friends. Jim is predeceased by parents: George and Janet, sister: Nellie Alcock and infant brother, parents-in-law: Ronald and Jessie Earle and siblings-in-law: George Greeley, Hunter Earle, and Gary Earle. Visitation will be held at Noel’s Funeral Home, Water Street, Carbonear on Tuesday, June 21 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The family respectfully asks that masks be worn during the visitation. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Jim Penney CeeBees Memorial Foundation via email money transfer to jimpenneyfoundation@gmail.com. The family thanks his excellent team of doctors, nurses, and other staff at Carbonear General Hospital for their compassionate care.
