Obituary of Martin McCarthy
Please share a memory of Martin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the unexpected passing of Martin James William McCarthy at a private residence in Carbonear on Friday April 21st, 2023, aged 63 years. Predeceased by his devoted wife of 38 years Christine (Purcell); his mother and father Alice and Herbert McCarthy; Mother and Father-in-law Ellen and Edward Purcell; brothers-in-law Don Purcell and Philip Delaney; Sisters-in-law Isabelle Delaney and Madeline Bray.
Martin will be forever missed by his daughter Melanie (Clayton) McCarthy (Riverhead) whom he adored. He leaves a void that can never be filled in the life of his cherished grandson Caleb who ‘loved and liked’ his dear poppy. The youngest of five siblings, Martin leaves behind with wonderful memories his brother Bill (Donna) McCarthy (Riverhead), sisters Frances O’Neil (Riverhead), Patsy Gibson (Riverhead) and his special sister Anne Mercer (Carbonear) who took such loving care of him. Leaving to remember him fondly brothers-in law Joe (Pat) Purcell (Labrador)and Brian (Maxine) Purcell (Ontario); sisters-in-law Mona (John) Healey (Nova Scotia), Ethel (Brian) Hunt (Alberta) and Carol Newman (Hr. Grace). He will also be remembered by nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours and many others who were fortunate to have met him.
Known for his quick wit, his dry sense of humour, his carpentry skills, his love of fishing and of course his coffee runs. Martin lived a private life and took pleasure in the simple things. Whatever worries or sorrows he had are now gone. He is at peace and once again being comforted and embraced by his beloved Christine who was surely waiting to greet him.
