My association with John goes back to the mid 90's when we were in charge of our respective Detachments at Bay Roberts in Hr. Grace. A couple years later, we were told to merge our two units into what became Trinity/Conception District.
Through this oft times challenging endeavor, I came to appreciate his professionalism and his fairness, and he would go out of his way to ensure that both Art Kelloway and I, as his Operations N.C.O's, were included in the decision making process.
John was a tireless worker, who expected no more out of any of his members than he was willing to give himself. A traditionalist, proud of his uniform and the history which went with it, he encouraged members of the importance of wearing the red serge to such events as Remembrance Day services, and set the example by doing so himself.
Of course, no memory of John is complete without reference to his sense of humor. He never took himself too seriously, and we always seemed to find a moment of laughter, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
Art was, and is, of course involved with the preservation of the Newfoundland Pony, and when the subject would come up in conversation, John would tell Art that the only good Nfld. pony he knew was in a salt beef bucket.
For a time while they were dating, Donna was still living in Pasadena, and John would head out every second or third weekend. On Sunday evening, I would invariably get the call from Art that John had the flu and would have to stay an extra day or two. We used to laugh about the fact that he had no sign of anything when he left, and no lingering effects when he got back. We didn't mind. We had the run of the office while he was gone, and he always well made up for the time away when he got back.
John was fiercely proud of his family, never forgot where he came from, and was always interested in how his members' families were doing as well. From Susan and I, to John's immediate and extended families, please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of this fine man.

The first thing that comes to mind is his gentleness and his laughter.
Whenever he called or dropped by, he always made the joke, “It’s me, your biggest torment”. Little did he know, I would love to see him coming or call.
He always made a point to say, “Have a safe trip home across them barrens”.
He was such a genuine sweet guy and I feel so blessed to have known him. A smile will always appear whenever I think of him.
Donna and family, you have so many memories to cherish.
God Bless.

Donna and Family, Sherry and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Jack's passing. He and I go back more than half a century and served for 38 years in the RCMP. Two young Newfoundlanders who met in Regina, Saskatchewan and remained friends for life. We shared so many memories over the years that it is difficult to allude to just one. Jack and I were non-swimmers, and in depot division that was not an easy pill to swallow. He and I attended extra classes and nearly drowned each other a number of times. Our finger prints are etched in the bamboo pole that pulled us to safety on more than one occasion. The swimming instructors could not believe that two Newfoundlanders could be so non buoyant. We made it and went our separate ways across Canada only to meet again home in Harbour Grace, where I worked for Jack as his operations Commander for Trinity Conception district.
Jack was a dedicated, hard working policeman who always put everybody's well being before his own. I feel he was a police persons policeman. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is a better force for his having been part of it. Our sincere condolence to Donna and all the Bishop Family. May his memory continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace my old friend. Art and Sherry Kelloway

I knew Jack(ie) from grade school and that was a long, long, time ago. I was a grade ahead of him yet many years in the same classroom because there were always, at least, 3 grades in the same classroom at one time. The most memorable thing I recall about Jackie’s character, from back then, was his quiet calm patient nature and a somewhat shy smile that captured the hearts of his classmates, everyone. Having just read all the comments on his obituary I can see that this character trait followed him throughout his life and served him well with his family and so many great friends. It is truly an honor for us all to have known him, even me for those few years so long ago. He touched the hearts of us all. I never saw Jackie in person again after I finished school and left HD. But then a few years ago I became good Facebook friends with his sister Emma and got to be reacquainted (of sorts) with the whole family, again. And what a great family they are and were. No problem to understand Jack's remarkably wonderful character, he came from great ‘stock.’ Rest in peace, my friend.,,, Jr. ……. Condolences to the family …Eugene(jr) and Linda.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear the news of John’s passing. My first Staff. The poor frigger. I put him through the ringer.
“Radical”. Yes. I believe that was the nickname he had on me. By the time my posting ended in Tri-Con I had made John a subject matter expert re resolving public complaints. I’m sure if someone had sent him to Ukraine he could have that event solved by now.
A kind and gentle man. A patient and a caring man. A fatherly figure to me as a young recruit. Again, if his old office walls could talk. I was fortunate to have met such an honourable and caring person so early in my service. I compared all my future posting to Tri-Con and none ever met the bar. My fondest memories are of working in Bat Roberts/Harbour Grace.
I knew John loved his family tremendously. He forever would talk about Donna, of how lucky he was, and how much she meant to him. I can still visualize the family picture in his office. Again, I spent a lot of time there. Too funny.
I extend my family’s sincere condolences to John’s family. We feel for all of you guys. I will forever remember John as a kind and gentle soul. I respected him tremendously.
