Roger, Connie, Peggy and families,
We were so sorry to hear of Carl’s passing. We have known your Dad and became friends since we came to Carbonear. He was always a great supporter of mine in my political career and always reminded me of the need to keep recreational needs and hockey in the forefront. Whenever we met it was always a pleasure to have a chat and to see him so pleasant despite the circumstances. In recent years we always met on Sundays as he faithfully attended Bethany United Church. Be assured our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

Carl was something to see skating up the ice for the CeeBee's back in late 50's and early 60's when George Faulkner put the team together to play in the Nfld league. As boy watching from the bleachers on Friday and Saturday nights, it was the greatest show in the world. A few years later I was on the wing with him at center ice, for me it was about the exuberance, and the thrill of pure speed, no one could catch me. But when I saw Carl from ice level, he showed me something totally beautiful about skating. He was the most natural skater I ever saw. I would be spell bound by his grace watching him come up the ice, forgetting I was there to play hockey!! He was a figure skater, pure poetry in motion, hockey player... and the most gifted natural athletic that I saw in my childhood. But this was not the most amazing thing about Curley Penny, because unbelievably, the grace, and gentle demeanor he showed on the ice, he showed every day of his life to every member of his family. Many years ago, when he was driving the oil truck, I wrote him and Barb an anonymous Xmas letter, expressing appreciation of the fact that I was his friend.
A person whose character and great nature I looked up to. Also, a gift of some thousands of dollars, still anonymous, because I knew how hard he worked on the oil truck to look after his family. To the family I wish to tell you my view of how I know he treated you. You were blessed to have him, for 86 years, as a father, grand, and great grandfather. The magnificent human being he was, just came natural to him! For the rest of us, Try to get your mind around that statement...that's the way this happens..you can't learn it, or teach it, he was born with it.....he was complete class, through and through. God will bless you Carl. I still look up to you...
your friend, phil earle

I have many fond memories of Carl. He was a gentleman in every way. His hockey skills were exceptional. He was a star in high school, Carbonear Senior, Cee Bees and was part of Herder Champions. I think it was late 50's or early 60's that Carl went to work at Harvey & Company in Carbonear and was succunded to St. John's to play for Harvey & Company in the St. John's commercial league. It was Carl who single handedly won the league championship for his team. He was an exceptional hockey player in his time. I ran into Carl on a few occasions, the latest a few years ago on Pikes field during a Tidley Tournament. We had a yarn regarding hockey years ago and the present. Another old time friend has left us...

The Penney family
Sorry to see that Carl has made his exit from the stage of life.
In his day and generation Carl Penney was an outstanding athlete- the 1st Captain of the famous Cee Bees Hockey Club of the 1960s and Herder Champs . He was also a tremendous softball player - one of the best of his generation .
More than his athletic prowess Carl was a genuinely personable and unassuming personality.
He had a multitude of friends and was well liked in his Community and elsewhere.
He worked hard to support his family -in his day and generation Carl Penny made a difference to many.
He is now at rest and may that rest be in peace.
Sincere condolences to those who mourn his passing.
Godspeed Carl
