To Lillian's family: Katarina and I visited from Ontario many times, most recently in the summer of 2007. Katarina, who was 11, loved to visit Christene and Lillian and play with the cats and the dog, Max. She enjoyed her chats with Aunt Lil and we looked forward to the funny stories and warm reception - with Aunt Lil, there was no such thing as a bad time to visit. We will miss her, but have wonderful memories of her experiences told to us in fine storytelling style. Our condolences, with love, Lisa and Katarina Rind (Katarina is Bill Taylor's great-granddaughter, grandchild to Karl Rind and Shirley Taylor-Rind. Her father is Juergen Rind.)

Hello Christine. Ann and I are in Ontario at present, visiting Mark and Antonia, and were so sorry to hear of Lillian's passing. Cathy was good to let us know. You were all so lucky to have her with you for so many years, and from our recent conversation, Christine, she seemed to have been in good health. I have many memories dating back to your store on Harvey street, and of many visits to your present home particularly when Gord was alive......Many cups of tea! I thank you for the opportunities to have played a little part in your lives. Ann and I will be thinking of you today, and wishing we could be there to share in your tribute to her. She was a wonderful lady who will be missed by many. We will be talking to you when we return home in a few days, but in the meantime, please share our condolences with everyone in your family. With Best Wishes to all..... Tim and Ann Venters

Joanne and I share your sorrow at the passing of my Aunt Lill, Mrs. Lillian Janes. Aunt Lill was an extraordinary individual. Her world revolved around the virtues of family, hard work, service to others, and personal integrity. Family was fundamental to Aunt Lill. She was happiest when surrounded by her large and ever-growing brood. I remember an Easter Sunday dinner several years ago when Joanne and I were honoured to join with 43 family members to eat at the Janes family home. Aunt Lill had been up since the wee hours of the morning cooking a mighty Newfoundland feast for her crew. And amidst the boisterous laughter that filled the room while we ate, she sat, quiet and unassuming, exuding love and respect for everyone gathered there that day, and receiving in return the love and respect everyone offered her in return. Lillian Janes was fiercely independent, not one to complain or to shirk her duty. She believed in the value of hard work at a time when work was real and truly hard. She began in her teens as a housekeeper for a Harbour Grace family, went on to win quiet fame as a relentless and dedicated worker at the fish plant, and then took over a failing smoke shop and turned it within months into a thriving convenience store that supported her and her family for year . The word ‘failure’ was simply not part of her vocabulary. Every door that closed in her face only meant that she would have to pry open new doors to grasp the opportunities she desired for herself and her family. My Aunt Lill believed that treating people as she would have them treat her was fundamental to human happiness and to success in life. When her supervisors at the fish plant pleaded for help at difficult times or with nasty projects, Lillian was the first to volunteer to help out. When the RCMP came trundling down the highway late at night looking for a coffee, Lillian was the only who hopped out of bed and opened up her store to brew them up a pot. When I came down to visit Harbour Grace Aunt Lill always had a place at her table for me; her lemon meringue pie will never be forgotten. But most of all, Aunt Lill exuded personal integrity. Though she loved a drink and a laugh, that laugh was never at the expense of others. She believed in a God who represented love, honesty, humility, charity and respect for others. And through her words and deeds she came to exemplify those qualities herself. All who knew her reveled in her happy smile, her quiet laugh and her generous nature. Lillian Janes’s family must hurt very badly at this moment. Her passing is a great loss, But there is solace for the family despite the immediate grief. As her family and friends gather round the grave to say a final farewell it would be wise to glance around at the faces somberly bidding good-bye. In those faces you will see the affection and respect of those who have basked in the pleasure of knowing my Aunt Lill. She is with us still. All of us carry a bit of her in our hearts. When we are at our best, we are simply carrying on the rich traditions of Mrs. Lillian Janes.
