Obituary of Alec Moores

Alec Douglas Moores (1919-2014)
Peacefully, at his home in Harbour Grace on April 16, 2014, Alec was reunited with his beloved wife, Maysie, who predeceased him on April 10, 2014. He was born in Blackhead, Conception Bay on December 30, 1919, a son of Oscar and Elizabeth Moores. He is predeceased by his brothers, John and Bert, his sister, Ruth, and his darling daughter, Alexis Denise. He is survived by his brother, Carl (Shirley), and sister, Dorothy, his sisters-in-law, Ida Weeks, Mildred Moores, and Lillian Babb, and his brother-in-law, Lorenzo Babb, together with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends, especially Boyd and Margaret. Alec and Maysie (Babb) were married in 1946. He will be greatly missed by his sons, Douglas (Chris), David (Norma) and Darroch and his grandchildren, Gregory (Julie), Ian (Kim), Beth (Matthew), Janna (Neil), Carl (Susan), Andrew (Shelley), Craig (Carrie), Joanne (Thomas) and Neal and great-grandchildren, Sara, Lauren, Roland, Victor, Nolan, Ewan, Graham, Emma, Paige, Drew, Alec, Carmen, Lulu and Rex. Alec was one of the leading businessmen of his generation in the Province. He began his career at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Fogo on May 14, 1937 and worked at several other branches in the Province. In 1944, he went into private business and worked in Montreal. In 1947, he returned to Newfoundland and began his career in the fishing industry, where he was still active up to his passing. He played a leading role in the original development of various fish species, such as crab, squid, turbot and caplin. He travelled all over the World promoting the fishing industry of the Province. At his passing, he was the Chairman of Harbour International Ltd. at Bay Roberts, which operates the largest cold storage in the Province. He had a remarkable 77 year career in business. In addition to his outstanding business career, Alec at various times was Mayor of the Town of Harbour Grace, Member of the House of Assembly for Harbour Grace, two time President of the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (FANL), a Director of the Fisheries Council of Canada and a member of the Board of Regents of Memorial University. He was also a Free Mason. He was a recipient of the 1967 Centennial Medal and the 2013 Queen's Jubilee Medal. He was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Atlantic Provinces Seafood Hall of Fame in 2012. He was an avid partridge hunter and salmon fisherman who loved his days on Bobbys Hills, Peters River Barrens and Cape Rodger. Alec lived a truly full and productive life of 94 years. He was a pioneer, visionary, innovator and a true entrepreneur. He had a loving relationship with Maysie and took great pride and delight in the accomplishments of his whole family. All of this, Alec did with a wonderful sense of humour and with a kind and caring disposition to all he met on the road of his life. Resting at Noel's Funeral Home, Harbour Grace on Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m., 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Funeral service to take place on Saturday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m. from Coughlan United Church, Harbour Grace. Interment in St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Harbour Grace. As an expression of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted.
