Please accept our sincere, heart felt sympathy and condolences. We were deeply saddened to hear of Craig's sudden passing and please be assured that you are in our thoughts and prayers. It was a pleasure to know Craig and work with him through the minor hockey system and he was an asset to the provinces minor hockey kids. Craig had a big heart and from the first time we met him, we knew that he was there for ALL the kids and his coaching ability and his approach to working with the kids was invaluable. He was a gentleman ,both on and off the ice, and a true mentor for all the kids lives that he touched. Kind words and gentle encouragement were always his approach to coaching, and both of our sons, were fortunate enough to have their lives touched by him through minor hockey. The heart, like the soul, has a memory, and in it are our most precious keepsakes, thank you for the fond memories and your friendship, you will be sadly missed.

Craig was one of the best teachers I've ever had, he loved each and every student the same and treated everyone with respect. I remember the first year he taught me was grade 2 and that was the first year that the computers were a part of our schooling. We were all sitting around at the desks with a computer and he told us a joke by saying that the school had a lot of mice and they were all in the room with us, turns out he only meant the ones on the computer. He will be forever missed by any student lucky enough to be his and i know that he is watching over each and every one of us.
Stay strong.

Tracy Shute posted a condolence

Today we look back with fond memories of a man that made us laugh, who gave so freely of himself for the benefit of his children and our children and our community.
In remembering Craig Shute, we are forced to look forward. Many of you over the last few days have asked, "If there's anything we can we do "
Well as a matter of fact there is.
There's lots you can do, because it will take many of us to carry on the work of this man.
Craig was like a torch bearer, always carrying the flame that kept the light burning for so many things that were important to him.
He was the spark in many a fun filled time, at the rink, on the road and around his family.
He was the flame that burned at the stadium day after day, night after night, weekend after weekend, tournament after tournament, doing things that we never even realized, helping with equipment, and single parents, and organizing. He didn't look for credit, you may never have known when Craig was involved, but we surely knew when he wasn't.
And certainly from the perspective of educating our children, the only thing better than having Craig in a classroom, was having him work at the board office so that he could be in many classrooms, lighting up many lives.
Perhaps what you can do is take the part of his flame that touched your life and carry it, in his honour. God gave us a gift in Craig, and we no longer have that gift, but please please do not let the things that were important to him, die with him, let them carry on in all of us.
To quote a line from Flanders Fields
"To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high."
Our challenge today is to carry the torch as highly and as proudly as Craig Shute did.

I am very fortunate to have grown up in Hr. Grace South with Craig. Even in his early years he was that go to guy, always there to ensure that the summer would have a recreation program, always there to give us a ride around the river, open up his mothers shop if we needed something, beat you one more time at a game of pool in his parents basement, or play ping pong after hours at the Hall, because he had the key. I looked up to him. When Mom would look for a babysitter we wouldn't quit until Craig agreed to it.
He & I dropped it all one year, I think it was 1988, & went to Florida, rented a car & drove from Daytona to St. Pete's, stopping everywhere along the way. It was fun. We were chosen from the audience at a venue at Disney (much like Jeopardy) to be contestants at a sports trivia game show. They gave us tapes of the show at the end.
Craig was my true friend & I will never forget him.

While just a few minutes ago having left a message of condolence, upon posting I thought of a passage that I'm sure would reflect how Craig would want us all to remember him. I hope you can use this in the days ahead to help you continue living as Craig would want you to do. THE LEGACY WHEN I DIE, GIVE WHAT IS LEFT OF ME TO MY CHILDREN. IF YOU NEED TO CRY, CRY FOR YOUR BROTHERS WALKING BESIDE YOU. PUT YOUR ARMS AROUND ANYONE AND GIVE THEM WHAT YOU NEED TO GIVE ME. I WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH SOMETHING; SOMETHING BETTER THAN WORDS OR SOUNDS. LOOK FOR ME IN THE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE KNOWN AND LOVED. AND IF YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT ME, THEN LET ME LIVE ON IN YOUR EYES, YOUR MIND, AND YOUR ACTS OF KINDNESS. YOU CAN LOVE ME MOST BY LETTING HANDS TOUCH HANDS AND LETTING GO OF CHILDREN THAT NEED TO BE FREE. LOVE DOES NOT DIE, PEOPLE DO. SO WHEN ALL THAT IS LEFT OF ME IS LOVE..... GIVE ME AWAY.

As an educator by profession and a volunteer by personal drive and passion Craig Shute has touched the lives of many young people. Everyone knows Craig was an avid Minor Hockey volunteer for the last number of years.
Yet in addition to Craig's involvement in Minor Hockey he was an exceptional volunteer with Minor Baseball, not only in the Carbonear-Harbour Grace area but all of NL.
As a very proud man, Craig would seldom put himself first as he was merely volunteering for the young players involved in the game. As a baseball coach, Craig was a great mentor and motivator, a person who could always bring out the best in his players. His coaching abilities were evident by the many championship plaques his teams garnered over the years.
Craig coached Northwest Avalon Baseball Teams to the following Provincial titles:
- Mosquito "C" in 1995, "B" in 1996 and "B" in 1997
- Pee Wee "A" in 1999
- Bantam "A" in 2000.
By winning the above titles, Craig's teams were given the opportunity to play in the Atlantic Championships. He coached teams in the Atlantic Championships in:
- Mosquito 1996, 1997
- Pee Wee 1999 (Finishing second place, two out of the three years).
By winning the National Qualifying Tournaments, Craig's teams represented NL in three National Championships:
- Pee Wee 1999
- Bantam 2000, 2001.
As a rising coach within NL Craig was on the coaching staff of the Under 17 Provincial All-Star Select Team at the Canada Cup Championships:
- Assistant Coach in 2001, 2002, 2004
- Coach in 2003.
He was also a part of the Canada Games Coaching staff as:
- Assistant Coach in 2005.
That means Craig coached minor baseball teams to five Provincial titles and two National Qualifying Championships, in three Atlantic Championships, in two National Tournaments, in four Canada Cups, and one Canada Games.
Craig was twice named Baseball NL Provincial Minor Division Coach of the year, 1999 and 2001. Craig also received recognition in October of 2001 during Baseball Canada's convention in Winnipeg as he was one of ten coaches across Canada nominated for Baseball Canada's 2001 Volunteer of the year. Craig was also on the local Baseball executive for six years.
It was during the summer of 2001 that I really got to know Craig and the passion he had for volunteering with our young players. Craig had a busy schedule but he gave up his personal time for the betterment of the young players around him. Craig was a level three certified coach and without hesitation agreed to accompany the Northwest Avalon Bantam Baseball team to the National Championships. Craig was going away for a week with the Provincial Select Team but he agreed to practice with our team and join us in Winsor, Ontario for the National Tournament on his way back from the Select tournament. Craig planned the agenda for our week in Winsor and left many great memories with all the players and coaches. As a team we knew he could spend so many hours working with our team because of the love and support he received from his loving wife and young children.
It quickly became apparent in 2001 that Craig had the admiration and respect from all the coaches, umpires, parents, fans and most importantly the players. Under Craig's leadership the players learned a lot more than the fundamentals of baseball. Craig constantly emphasized and required all players to display sportsmanship and respect to everyone involved in the game. Those same players, whom are now Yale graduates, engineers, members of the armed forces, firefighters and trades-people, contribute much of their personal success to the time and effort Craig had spent with them. I know that all of Craig's former players and the player's parents will be forever grateful for the time and effort he had given to shape and develop the many important personal characteristics in the young boys and girls.
I know that as a hockey volunteer he touched as many lives and will be remembered and honored for the many hours he provided. Craig spent countless hours organizing hockey pools, hockey tournaments, especially for girls in our area, and many other important activities on behalf of the young people in the CBN area.
It is often said that "if you need something done, give it to a busy person." Well more often than not Craig Shute was that person and for that we will always be proud to have known such a great dedicated, loyal and loving man.

Craig did so much for "us", by "us" I mean the "boys" of Hr Grace South. We are all grown up now and we owe many of our memories to Craig and his selfless attitude, sense of humour and willingness to go the extra mile with and for us.
As children we would chase Craig around first when he had his Chevette, Daytona and later to admire his Eagle Talon. Much of the time we were by standers as we watched the older boys ,as we saw them, go about their business. Craig was a role model for us. He was held up many times by my father as an example of what you can become if you are a hard worker and decent person; he was held in very high regard.
I will attempt to recount some of the things Craig did for us and how I remember him.
We would all be impressed with Craig when he worked at the "Shop" and we would gather out by the Oil tank to have our lunch he would come out and talk to us and throw rocks into the harbour from the road. We were thoroughly impressed. We would spend hours trying to duplicate the feat. He was our recreation leader in the summer, he kept us busy from 9 am to 4 pm or later. He played Floor hockey with us, brought us on field trip to Salmonier line, down on the feather among other places to have sports days or in the beach for scavenger hunts.
When we were early teens we felt the need for a service club for young men. It was a offshoot of the Men's Community Club (MCC) of Hr Grace South. It was dubbed the YMCC. He was our chaperone/sponsor. He helped us set up an executive using parliamentary procedure where we learned the proper way of conducting meetings, he arranged trips to the stadium, more floor hockey, sports at the school gym in Hr Grace. He and a few of the men of Hr Grace South started the South Side Softball team that were dominant in the local league. Later many of these same people with Craig as one of the leaders became one of the best Softball teams in the province. I spent many days chasing them around watching and a scattered time even getting to play with him or against him either way it was a lot of fun. He was the driving force for many community oriented events. He even organized our Dart league and ourtrips to St John's every spring where a great deal of fun was had by all.
In recent years I have gotten to know Craig on a professional level. We are both teachers. He would give me advice on different aspects regarding the profession and we would have a joke or a laugh or two at it all. We got our careers going similar in a similar way. Both of us spent time in South Eastern Labrador. We often compared stories and we even had some friends in common. Now that I live in St Anthony the people we spend most of our time with were also good friends of Craig when he lived in Labrador. Around every corner our paths crossed. He encouraged me to take on the position I am presently in with Western School District. The same one he was doing with Eastern School District. ( Numeracy Support Teacher)It was a proud moment for me when I went to my first meetings in St John's and I could set down with Craig as a colleague and a friend and discuss the future of K-6 Mathematics in Newfoundland and Labrador. Might sound a bit odd for some people reading this but this is our chosen profession ad we both enjoyed doingbthis and talking about it as well. Craig was a very knowledgeable person in this regard. When he spoke he knew what he was talking about. He was a great help in getting me started especially answering questions and being an excellent colleague. But most of all, even though we did not spend much time in each others company over the past number of years or even see each other very often, he was always there when I needed anything. He was a great friend.
I am quite confident that every person who spent time with Craig can write a page or two and extend on what I have written about what he done and how he affected their lives. I know I could go on!
If we all can just aspire to be like Craig and treat people as Craig treated them ,with compassion . It will be a great world.
God Bless

To the Shute family, I am so very sorry to hear about Craig's sudden passing. I have known Craig since the early 90s when we did our Learning Resource Diplomas together. The past two years have seen him support us in Mathematics at Fatima Academy. I have worked closely with Craig as have other staff members. When Craig was at Fatima, he felt like a part of the staff. We loved to see him come and the students loved to spend time with him. Our hockey playing students loved to share hockey stories with him and were so impressed when he brought them all autographed posters of Danny Cleary and the Stanley Cup! He was a welcome face at Fatima every time he visited. Know that we, the staff of Fatima will miss Craig and we offer our deepest condolences. God bless you all and we hope that the wonderful memories you have of him will guide you through this troubled time. Darlene Walsh Asst. Principal Fatima Academy St. Bride's

It is with a saddened heart that I write a message about a former colleague and friend, Craig. I worked with Craig when he was a budding new teacher just starting out on his career in education. Craig brought a ray of light into the room with a quiet and shy smile. I remember his enthusiasm for kids and his zest for the sporting life he loved. Craig will certainly be missed by all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his immedicate family and his family within the teaching profession. While it is difficult to say something about someone else at a very sad time such as this, I would just like to say that Craig is now embraced by the Son as he continues on his eternal journey to our Father, our Maker. God speed and may he rest in peace.

It is with a heavy heart that we send these condolences for your acute loss and for the long journey ahead, adjusting to life without Craig's physical presence. Many years ago I worked with Craig in Port Hope Simpson. The laughs we had! Craig was always quick witted and highlighted the humour in any situation. He seemed to draw out the best in students and colleagues in an effortless and lighthearted manner. I'm sure anyone who recalls memories of Craig, even at this sad time, would find themselves smiling at several points. May it give you some comfort to know that his strength of character, and love of life, both live on in all those whose knew him, and my husband and I consider ourselves privileged to have had that opportunity.

To Stephanie, Kelsey, Kristen and Brandon, We were shocked to hear of your dad's passing. Abigail said this evening when I told her how she so enjoyed him as her coach when she played with the girls a few years back on the under 11 CeeBees team. We had so much fun. I remember many times this season I met him in the rink and he always asked if I was going to bring her out for the girls team. Unfortunately, I didn't. Please accept our condolences at this difficult time. We will keep you in our prayers.Your dad will be certainly missed by everyone he knew.
