Marilyn, Jenny & Angie Steve was always one of the ' by's ' that hung out in the shed with dad, and of course, Nain. He was one of dads Pallbearers and Steve also helped uncle Tom burie Nain, our family dog / dads best friend. Now that Steve and dad are buried close to each other there is a space that fills up inside of me, knowing that they are up there having a laugh, a beer, and who knows what else !:) The Gears have been nothing but family to us for as long as I've known them and many years before that, mom tells me many many story's of Steve for she has lots of memories <3 Marilyn, Jenny & Angie, I know how strong you woman are, I know you can do this :) See you sometime soon I hope. <3 Mikaela.

Marilyn, Jenny, Angie and the Gear Family; I am so sorry and deeply saddened of Steve's death. Words cannot begin to describe the hurt and emptiness that you, myself and anyone who knew Steve feel at his passing. He was a wonderful man who has always been more like family to me than anything else. He has and always will hold a special place in my heart of a loving, fun man who always treated me as one of his own. I have so many fond memories of Steve; I would not be able to choose the most special one alone. However the one that most readily pops into my head when I think of my younger years is Steve walking down from the Red Circle with three bags of belly buttons in his hand for me and my sisters. He NEVER came back from the store empty handed. Steve has been a part of my life ever since day one and I'll miss him terribly. He and Marilyn came to keep dad company when he was sick and that is something we are eternally grateful for. Not all people are lucky enough to share the love Steve and Marilyn share- to be best friends along with husband and wife. And that's something to cherish forever. Steve was an honorable man with a huge heart and we're all lucky to have had him in our lives. May your memories bring you happiness on the days that nothing else can. I hope you find comfort in the wonderful memories of your husband/father that everyone can offer. I'm sure there are enough to tell for a lifetime. It breaks my heart that I cannot be there with you at this time; I really wish I could be- you girls are like family. You're always on my mind and that won't change until I get to see you again. Until then, take care. Stay strong; you've gained a guardian angel to look over you and if it's any comfort- please know that he's in good hands. You're in my thoughts and prayers today and every day. I love you all xoxox Sara

Jenny and Angie, I know that you probably do not remember me as you were both just wee ones when my Mom and I used to take care of you. I am so sorry that you've lost your Dad. My prayers are with the Gear family as they mourn the loss of a loved one. Although I don't know Marilyn and the girls I know Steve and the Gear family well because we grew up as next neighbours on Patrick Street. I am a little older than Steve but he chummed around with my two younger brothers so was always popping in and out of the house on Patrick Street. When I was Rector of The Anglican Parish Of Upper Island Cove I used to run into Steve at the Carbonear Hospital on a regular basis while doing pastoral visiting there. Steve always had a hearty welcome and smile on these occasions and he always made sure that we recognized and greeted each other no matter how busy we were. Steve, I understand from my brothers that you have had a real battle over the past months. Well the earthly journey is over now and you are in the gentle care of our Creator. Away from the hurt and pain you have endured. Steve, may Marilyn, the girls and the whole Gear family find some comfort and peace in knowing that your friendlyness and kindness has made a difference in this world. "Rest eternal grant unto you, and let light perpetual shine upon you".

It is with a heavy heart that I write this note to the Gear Family. I knew that Steve was unwell but kept hoping for that miracle that you too must have wanted so badly. We prayed for Steve that a cure might be found, for the doctors that they would be granted the gift of healing from God the Father and lastly that he would find peace and comfort on his journey home. I know that you must have been dreading the day that your Soul mate, Dad and brother would have to leave this physical world. But he is not far! His spirit lives in your hearts and minds. The memories created throughout a short lifetime will comfort you and get you through these dark days. I know the memories of Steve that I have still make me smile. He was always so pleasant and smiling. I just know that whenever I saw him he always made you feel like he really wanted to talk to you and was genuinely interested in what you had to say. I can scarcely believe that he will no longer walk amongst us! But because he left such a large footprint in our lives, we will always carry a piece of him with us! Rest in peace Steve! You will be missed dear friend and neighbour! Until we meet again!
