Obituary of Daphne Verna Abbott
Daphne was born at the Clown’s Cove area of Freshwater, Carbonear on February 7, 1929, during a blizzard as the third daughter of Laura and Charles Butt, a sixth generation member of her extensive family. After graduation from high school, Daphne taught for eight years at various schools in the province, ending in Gander in 1956. From Gander, Daphne lived as a life companion and soul mate of husband Bruce at New Brunswick, Ontario, Newfoundland, Germany, and the United States, before returning home in retirement at Harbour Grace in 1990. Daphne was predeceased by brother, Roland James and sisters, Mabel, Florence, Cecily, and Emma ‘Peggy’ and is remembered fondly by husband, Bruce, brother, John, sisters-in-law, Lillian, Ruby, and Frances, and brothers-in-law, Alexander Bishop, Winston Abbott, and John Cayer. Daphne is also remembered with happiness by her extended family of three generations, and her many friends and acquaintances. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive relatives and friends at Noel’s Funeral Home, Harvey Street, Harbour Grace on Tuesday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate Daphne’s life will take place on Wednesday, August 30 at 2:00 p.m. from Coughlan United Church, Harbour Grace. Following the service, Daphne will rest in the United Church Cemetery at Freshwater, Carbonear among her many family members and friends of past years.
