I never had the privilege of meeting Bill Parsons, but I knew much about him from the stories told to me by his son Keith, who served with me on a bargaining team negotiating a labour contract with the federal government.
Afterwards, when I was fortunate enough to spend time in St. John's, negotiating collective agreements at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Keith and I would occasionally have the opportunity to meet up, and often our conversations turned to our fathers and their great talents and accomplishments. From Keith, I learned that Bill was a good and decent man who loved his family, who tried to make the world a better place, and who shared with my own Dad a great love of horses.
If a man's life can be measured by the esteem in which his children hold him, then job well done, Bill! Yours was a life well lived.

Recently I lost my dear mother, and within 30 days
I also lost my mother-in-law.. What helped us during this
time period was the comfort from the Holy Bible , like at
Isaiah 25 verse 8 - "The Sovereign Lord will swallow up
death forever, and wipe away the tears from all faces."
Also at Revelation 21 verse 4 we find God's promise
to remove both pain and death. For more comfort,

I was very sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Parsons.
As a business reporter in the media, I interviewed Mr. Parsons many times over the years and was repeatedly struck by his patience and kindness toward all people, his dedication to improving people's lives, and his sensible, no-nonsense approach to problems.
Once at a jobsite, he overheard a couple managers grumbling about seeing workers standing around doing nothing. His response: "Go over and ask them what they're doing, and if they're not on a break, tell them to go back to work." Sensible. Perfect.
The labour movement lost a dear and respected leader.

I got to know Bill in 1985 when I chaired a royal commission on employment and unemployment. The labour movement was originally skeptical about the Commission. But I met with Bill over lunch and a bottle of wine and he agreed to give the commission a chance. Under Bill's leadership the Federation of Labour ending up helping the commission in our inquiries and supporting our final report, in particular the sections on labour relations and enhancing women's role in economic and social development.
I'll always appreciate Bill's flexibility and commitment to the long-term development of the province which took precedence over short-term political squabbles.
A good life worth celebrating for sure!

There has been a tendency for media and the general public to regard labor unions and their leaders as having restricted mindsets. In other words, they have been regarded as interested only in their own selfish interests and short-term rewards. While it might apply to some, there is one labor leader to whom it never, ever applied, and that was Bill Parsons. I knew Bill from the mid-seventies when I was involved in the NDP and on first meeting him I was struck with his empathy for others. He rarely, if ever, harbored a single thought without thinking how it could help his fellow man (or woman). He always considered in every job he ever had that his mission was to help others. Here is an example.
In the mid nineteen nineties I had spent two years slaving to develop a community garden in Pippy park for the people in the Brophy Place area. When I finally had it ready for tillage more huge problems surfaced. First, where would we get the tools? And then, if we did have a bunch of picks and shovels, how could they be secured after my prospective gardeners went home? So, a shed would be needed too. I racked my brain and consulted all the numerous people, who had helped so far. But I came up empty because it was such a daunting task. When I was tempted to give up, I thought of Bill who was then running the NL Building and Construction Trades Council. I called him and he said, “Come up and we’ll talk about it”. Soon as I told him about the needy people on Brophy Place he said immediately, “Listen, John!”. “You get the tools you need, AND the shed and I’ll take care of raising the money”. “But, Bill”, I replied. “The shed alone is approximately $1000.00”. “No matter”, replied Bill. “This is important”. And he sent me off saying “Just bring me the bill”. I was so happy and off I went to the Co-Op store and bought the tools, then to Chester Dawe and got the shed. As I negotiated the prices with the cashier another horrible thought struck me. HOW WOULD I GET THE SHED TO THE COMMUNITY GARDEN!? I phoned Bill to tell him there was something I forgot. “Listen, John”, he said. “you hire what ever truck you want and put it on the bill”. The total came to over a $1000.00 and when I took the Bill to his office, he looked at it and immediately asked his secretary for the cheque book. Every time I drive along Ridge Road today, I look down at the garden and seeing the now-weather-beaten shed I think of Bill. He deserves to rest in peace. My sincere condolences to all his family. Many of our OHS and WCB laws have been strengthened through his leadership and advocacy. Workers' history has been preserved as well through Bill's foresight of having a book written to reflect workers' struggles in our Province and the growth of the labour movement here in NL. To all of Bill's Family, It is with great sadness to see the pain and suffering and now passing of Bill, Bill was a true friend and co-worker of mine both in Labrador City, also while we both served on the Executive of N. L. Federation of Labour and also while on Staff with the United Steelworkers of America. My many memories, conversations and travels with Bill in our line of work was always a learning experience. I am grateful to have been able to spend some time with him in his final days. Bill truly was perhaps the greatest Labour Leader to ever serve the Labour Movement of Newfoundland & Labrador. Rest in Peace my friend, for you were "TOP SHELF"

To the Parson Family,
Bill was a friend and mentor to both Linda and me. He was a very strong and determined advocate for workers. We had the opportunity and privilege to work with him as members of CWC doing collective bargaining and labour relations at the phone company. Bill taught us a great deal about labour relations during that period. Rest well our friend, we will always remember you! Linda and Phil Briffett

Ruby,Keith,Kevin,Katherine and Parsons family,
We are so saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing. He will be remembered as being a kind, gentle, giving man who always loved to have visits ( and of course cook) when we were home. Our vacations home won’t be the same without going “down on the neck” to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner and to chat about what everyone is doing! Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.Hold on to your great memories! Rest In Peace Bill!

We are so sorry to hear of your loss.
We both worked with Bill at the NL Construction Safety Association and I worked with Bill at Hibernia. He was always such a professional. Every time time he was at a meeting with the NLCSA he would always stop by my office for a chat. We were all committed to Occupational Health and Safety and believed in the safety of all!!
He will be missed by the industry to say the least.
May he rest in peace and all of your special memories get you through this sad time.
