Obituary of Sophie Flight
Please share a memory of Sophie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sophie Flight, our dear mother and the treasured grandmother and great-grandmother of our family who knew her as Nanny Sophie. She passed peacefully away at her residence, the Agnes Pratt Home, on Sunday, September 6, in the presence of family members, at the age of 102. She is predeceased by her husband, George, who died in 1989.
Sophie was the eldest of eight children, born to parents Susie and Stanley Bowers, in Harry’s Habour, NL. The family later moved to Burlington, NL. Sophie moved to Buchans as a young woman. It was in Buchans that she and George met, got married, and raised their family together. She was an active member of the Buchans United Church, the Rebekah Lodge, and the LOBA. She worked as a cook at the A.M. Guy Memorial Hospital for many years, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. It was said that people faked illness in order to be admitted to the hospital to enjoy one of her meals. Sophie and George retired to Broad Cove in 1981. She was a very caring person who had a deep capacity for empathy and who put the welfare of others before her own. She was an avid knitter and always enjoyed a game of Skip-Bo with friends.
Left with a lifetime of wonderful memories are her son, Clyde, and daughter-in-law Brenda, daughter, Bernice, and son-in-law Calvin Miles, grandchildren: Jane (Heath O’Neill), Jennifer (Chris King), Peter (Julia Bloomquist), Adrienne (Sean May), and David Kelleher-Flight. Sophie adored her great-grandchildren, Sophie and Sarah O’Neill, Isaac, Alex, and Serena King, Eddie and George Miles, and Sebastian and Xavier May, whose presence in her life in her later years brought her much love and happiness.
Sophie leaves one surviving sister, Reta Elliott, of Buchans, NL, as well as sister-in-law Evelyn Bowers and special niece Loretta Bowers, who both reside in Kitchener, ON. She also leaves to mourn numerous other nieces, nephews and many family friends.
A warm thank you to Sophie’s roommate, Betty Butler, and her wonderful family for all the kindness they shared. We would also like to thank the staff at the Agnes Pratt Home for caring for our mother over the past five years. We are extremely grateful for all that you have done and wish to extend a special thank you to “the walking girls.”
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Noel’s Funeral Home, Western Bay. There will be no visitation; a family service will be held in Broad Cove.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations are invited to consider the Agnes Pratt Home Foundation (Agnes Pratt Home Foundation Inc., 239 Topsail Rd, St. John’s, NL A1E 2B4) or Diabetes Canada, Newfoundland Division (P.O. Box 8003. St. John’s, NL A1B 3X2).
Your expressions of sympathy are greatly appreciated. Sophie lived a long, full life, surrounded with joy and love, and will be dearly missed.
