Obituary of Joseph P. 'Joe' Short

Please share a memory of Joseph P. 'Joe' to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Joe of Carbonear, Newfoundland in the presence of his loving wife, son, siblings and extended family at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on Tuesday, August 30, at the age of 55 years. Predeceased by parents: Gerard and Sadie; brothers: Gregory and Gerry; two infant siblings; mother-in-law: Joan Gillard; sister-in-law: Kerry Coleman. Forever remembered by, loving wife: Linda; son: Justin; step-daughter: Samantha Hapgood, Cambridge, ON; grandchildren: Aubrey, Tristan and Kaiden, Cambridge, ON; father-in-law, Lloyd Gillard, Goulds; two brothers: Randy (Donine), Carbonear, and Sam, Kingston; three sisters: Mary Short, Edmonton, AB, Lucille (Bob) White, Harbour Grace, and Charmaine (Tim) O'Leary, Kitchener, ON ; sister-in-law, Patricia Woodfine, Kingston; and a large number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Joe’s knowledge was astounding and infinite. He received top marks in all his courses throughout his education, and was always learning either through employment related courses or his own aptitude for knowledge. Ever the curious individual, he made it a point of knowing every detail about anything he put his mind to. Whether it was taking apart a vehicle to put it back together or understanding everything about his health, he knew it to a scientific point. While we may not have understood everything to the extent Joe did, we will miss hearing him describe information and stories to us in great detail. Joe also believed in the power of prayer and had an unwavering faith in God. Quiet in his personal achievements, his proudest accomplishment was his son, Justin. Joe fought through health issues for years and had recently been on an upward trajectory toward healing and better physical health. Though his future with a new heart was cut short, his family is grateful for the work and dedication of the doctors and nurses at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and for the family of the donor. Visitation at Noel’s Funeral Home, Water Street, Carbonear on Wednesday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service on Wednesday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. from Noel’s Memorial Chapel, Carbonear. Interment in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Carbonear. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation, 40 Ruskin Street Room H-2408, Ottawa, ON, K1Y 4W7, online at foundation.ottawaheart.ca.
